Larry’s Restoration Story: From Addiction to Faith and Freedom

My name is Larry, and thank you for letting me share my story.

For most of my life, I was a normal, hardworking man. I was an electrician. I showed up, paid the bills, and lived what looked like a typical life. God wasn’t really part of it—not because I hated Him, but because He wasn’t close to me.

I married the woman I met in high school, and together we built a life filled with the usual ups and downs. Like many people, we were weekend partiers. Drinking was normal. Parties were normal. What we didn’t realize was how quietly those choices would grow into something far more destructive.

Weekend partying turned into casual drug use.
Casual use turned into dependence.
And eventually, my wife became addicted.

Painkillers came first. Then heroin.

I didn’t understand addiction back then. I believed love and effort could fix it. But addiction doesn’t listen to logic—or love. My income couldn’t support her habit, and before long, it became my habit too.

Desperation took over.

I needed money—more than I had ever needed before. And I made decisions that would change my life forever. I turned to serious crime, robbing banks by passing written notes to tellers and demanding cash. Over time, I became more confident, more reckless, and more lost.

Addiction slowed me down, clouded my judgment, and eventually caught up with me.

I was arrested.
And I went to prison.

There, I sobered up the hard way.

While I was incarcerated, the unimaginable happened—my wife overdosed and passed away. The weight of guilt, grief, and regret nearly crushed me. I felt responsible. I felt empty. I didn’t want the life I had left.

But God wasn’t finished with me.

My prison cellmate was involved in a church program and kept inviting me. At first, I resisted. Then one day, I went. Slowly, something changed. I found forgiveness. I found truth. And I found God—really found Him—for the first time in my life.

My life was saved.
And so was my soul.

Today, I am a free man. I am sober. I have a beautiful wife and children. And I live each day with gratitude, humility, and faith.

I truly believe this:

This is my restored life.
