It sounds like something from a horror movie.
A ghost story.
A superstition from the ancient world.
Many people dismiss the idea of evil spirits because they cannot see them. Others become so fascinated by the subject that they begin looking for demons behind every strange event. The Bible calls us to do neither.
Instead, it reveals a sobering truth.
Evil is real.
Satan is real.
Demons are real.
And although they are invisible, they are engaged in a spiritual battle that affects every human being.
The Bible Clearly Teaches That Evil Spirits Exist
From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture speaks about Satan and his angels as real spiritual beings.
During Jesus’ earthly ministry, He repeatedly encountered people possessed by demons. He spoke to them. He cast them out. They recognized His authority because they knew exactly who He was.
This was never treated as mythology.
It was reality.
Mark records one of these encounters:
“Whenever the unclean spirits saw Him, they fell down before Him and cried out, ‘You are the Son of God!'”
— Mark 3:11
Even the demons knew Jesus was the Son of God.
Their belief did not save them.
It terrified them.
Satan Is Not Equal to God
One of the greatest misconceptions is that God and Satan are equal opponents locked in an endless battle.
They are not.
God is eternal.
God is all-powerful.
God created everything.
Satan is a created being who rebelled against God.
He has power, but it is limited.
He has influence, but he is not sovereign.
He knows much, but he is not all-knowing.
The outcome of the battle has already been decided.
Christ has already won the victory through His death and resurrection.
The Devil’s Greatest Weapon Isn’t Possession
Many people fear dramatic stories of demonic possession.
The Bible certainly records instances where demons possessed individuals during the time of Jesus.
But for most people today, Satan works in far quieter ways.
He lies.
He deceives.
He tempts.
He distracts.
He fills hearts with bitterness.
He whispers pride.
He fuels lust.
He encourages greed.
He convinces people they have plenty of time to come to God later.
Jesus described Satan this way:
“He was a murderer from the beginning… for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
— John 8:44
Lies are his native language.
If he can convince you to believe a lie, he doesn’t have to force you anywhere.
You’ll walk there yourself.
The Battle Is Invisible
One of the most important passages in the Bible about spiritual warfare is found in Ephesians.
Paul writes:
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
