There are moments in life when the pain feels so overwhelming that it seems impossible for anyone to truly understand it. A broken heart. The death of someone you love. The betrayal of a friend. A frightening diagnosis. Depression that refuses to lift. Loneliness that lingers long after everyone else has gone home. In those moments, one question often rises above every other:
“God… do You even know what I’m going through?”
The answer from Scripture is not simply yes.
The answer is that He knows every tear, every sleepless night, every silent prayer, every heartbreak, and every burden you have ever carried.
God is not distant from your suffering. He is present in it.
King David wrote these comforting words in Psalm 56:8:
“You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in Your bottle. You have recorded each one in Your book.”
Think about the beauty of that image. Every tear you have cried in secret, every moment you thought no one noticed, every painful night when your heart felt shattered—God saw it all. Not one tear has escaped His attention. The world may overlook your pain, but Heaven never does.
The Bible also tells us that God is especially close when our hearts are broken.
Psalm 34:18 says:
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Notice what the verse does not say. It does not promise that believers will never experience sorrow. Instead, it promises that when sorrow comes, God draws near. Sometimes His greatest work is not removing the storm immediately but walking with us through it until we reach the other side.
Perhaps the greatest evidence that God understands pain is found in Jesus Himself.
God did not remain distant from human suffering. He stepped into it.
Jesus experienced rejection.
He experienced betrayal by one of His closest friends.
He experienced abandonment.
He experienced false accusations.
He experienced physical torture.
He experienced unimaginable grief.
The prophet Isaiah described Him centuries before His birth in Isaiah 53:3:
“He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief.”
Jesus understands pain because He willingly entered it.
When Lazarus died, Jesus already knew He would raise him from the dead. Yet standing beside the grief of those who loved Lazarus, the shortest verse in the Bible reveals one of the deepest truths.
John 11:35
“Jesus wept.”
He wept because He loved.
He wept because suffering grieves the heart of God.
He wept because He is not untouched by the pain of those He created.
If Jesus could stand beside a grave and weep, then He certainly understands the tears you cry today.
The writer of Hebrews reminds us of this incredible truth.
Hebrews 4:15–16 says:
“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet without sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
Jesus does not simply observe your suffering.
He sympathizes with it.
He understands it.
He invites you to bring it directly to Him.
The apostle Peter gives us another comforting promise.
1 Peter 5:7
“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”
Not because He tolerates you.
Not because He pities you.
Because He cares for you.
Those words are deeply personal. The Creator of the universe invites you to place every fear, every burden, every disappointment, and every heartbreak into His hands.
Sometimes we ask God to remove our pain immediately, and sometimes He does. Other times He chooses to strengthen us while we walk through it. The apostle Paul pleaded for God to remove what he called his “thorn in the flesh,” yet God’s answer was different than Paul expected.
2 Corinthians 12:9
“My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.”
God’s grace often shines brightest in the darkest valleys.
Pain has a way of convincing us that we have been abandoned.
Faith reminds us that we have not.
Even when you cannot feel His presence, God is still working.
Even when you cannot see His hand, He is still holding yours.
Even when your prayers seem to echo into silence, Heaven has not stopped listening.
One of the greatest promises ever spoken is found in Romans 8:28:
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”
Notice that the verse does not say all things are good.
Cancer is not good.
Betrayal is not good.
Loss is not good.
Death is not good.
But God is so powerful that He can take the worst moments of our lives and weave them into His greater purpose for those who trust Him.
Application
If your heart is hurting today, know this:
God sees you.
God knows your name.
God hears every prayer you whisper through your tears.
God understands your pain because His own Son willingly suffered to rescue you.
You may not understand why your suffering came, and you may not see the answer today. But you are never asked to carry your burden alone.
The cross is God’s everlasting reminder that He knows suffering, He understands grief, and His love for you is greater than the pain you are carrying today.
Your tears matter to Him.
Your prayers matter to Him.
You matter to Him.
And the God who loves you enough to send His only Son will never stop walking beside those who place their trust in Him.
