What Does It Mean to Fear God?

Q: Why does the Bible tell us to fear God if God loves us?

A: Because God’s love does not make Him less powerful, less holy, or less worthy of reverence.

The fear of God is not merely panic or terror. It is understanding who God is—and understanding who we are before Him.

He is the Creator.

We are the creation.

He gives life. He knows every thought, sees every hidden thing, and holds every human being accountable.

Scripture says:

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.” — Proverbs 9:10

Fear of God means having such deep reverence for Him that His Word carries more weight than your desires, your culture, your friends, or the opinions of the world.

Q: Should Christians actually be afraid of God’s judgment?

A: We should never become so comfortable with God’s mercy that we forget His justice.

Jesus Himself warned:

“And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” — Matthew 10:28

Those are serious words.

We often fear everything except the One Scripture tells us to fear.

We fear losing money.

We fear losing relationships.

We fear getting older.

We fear what people think about us.

We fear rejection, failure and death.

Yet people will openly mock God, ignore His commandments and live as though they will never stand before Him.

But Scripture says:

“It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” — Hebrews 10:31

God’s patience should never be mistaken for God’s approval.

Q: Then how can we fear God and love Him at the same time?

A: Because reverence and love are not enemies.

A person who truly understands God’s greatness doesn’t run from Him—they recognize how desperately they need Him.

God isn’t asking you to spend your life hiding from Him.

He is calling you to respect Him, obey Him, trust Him and understand that He is God.

Solomon spent Ecclesiastes examining everything this world could offer. Wealth. Pleasure. Wisdom. Work. Success.

At the end, he reduced life to something remarkably simple:

“Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” — Ecclesiastes 12:13

One day every distraction disappears.

The career ends.

The money stays behind.

The possessions belong to somebody else.

Your reputation no longer matters.

And you stand before the God who gave you life.

That is why fearing God matters.

Not because God wants you trembling beneath your bed.

But because He deserves to be taken seriously.

Love Him.

Trust Him.

Obey Him.

Never forget His mercy.

But never become so comfortable with His mercy that you forget who God is.

He is not simply part of your life.

He is the God before whom your life will ultimately be judged.
