How Does God Want Us to Treat Strangers?

In a world that often teaches us to look out for ourselves first, the Bible teaches something radically different. God repeatedly calls His people to show kindness, compassion, and hospitality—not just to family and friends, but to strangers as well.

One of the most powerful truths in Scripture is that God never intended for us to divide people into categories of “worthy” and “unworthy.” Every person we encounter is someone created in the image of God. Every stranger has a story. Every face in the crowd is a soul that matters to our Creator.

Jesus summarized how we should treat others in what has become known as the Golden Rule:

“Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 7:12)

Think about the simplicity and power of those words. If you were lonely, how would you want to be treated? If you were struggling, how would you want someone to respond? If you were new, hurting, afraid, or searching for hope, how would you want others to treat you? Jesus tells us to be that person for someone else.

The command to care for strangers is found throughout the Bible. God told His people:

“You shall love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.” (Deuteronomy 10:19)

God wanted Israel to remember what it felt like to be outsiders, vulnerable and in need of kindness. The lesson remains true today. Most of us can remember a time when we felt alone, rejected, overlooked, or uncertain. Those experiences should make us more compassionate, not less.

The writer of Hebrews gives this powerful reminder:

“Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels.” (Hebrews 13:2)

We never know who God may place in our path. A simple act of kindness—a smile, a conversation, a helping hand, an invitation, a prayer—can change the direction of someone’s life. What seems small to us may be exactly what another person desperately needed.

Jesus took this principle even further. In one of His most powerful teachings, He identified Himself with the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, and the needy:

“I was a stranger and you took Me in.” (Matthew 25:35)

The message is profound. When we show love to others, we are reflecting the heart of Christ. When we welcome people, help people, and care for people, we are serving the One who first showed mercy to us.

The truth is, every one of us was once a stranger to God’s grace. Yet through Jesus Christ, we were welcomed into His family. We were not turned away. We were not rejected. We were offered forgiveness, hope, and eternal life through His sacrifice on the cross.

That is why Christians should be known for kindness.

Not because people always deserve it.

Not because everyone will appreciate it.

But because God showed kindness to us when we needed it most.

The next stranger you meet may be carrying burdens you’ll never see. They may be fighting battles you’ll never know about. A kind word, a helping hand, or a moment of compassion may become a light in one of the darkest seasons of their life.

Treat people the way you would want to be treated.

Love your neighbor.

Welcome the stranger.

And let the world see the love of Christ through the way you treat everyone you meet.
