Romans 10:17
Q: Where does real faith come from?
A: The Bible gives us a direct answer:
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” — Romans 10:17 KJV
Faith isn’t built on feelings. It isn’t inherited from your parents. It doesn’t come simply because you attend church, call yourself a Christian, or believe that God exists.
Faith begins when we hear the Word of God.
God gave us His Word so we could know who He is, what He has done, what He promises, and what He requires from us. The more we hear and understand Scripture, the more reason we have to trust Him.
But Romans 10 isn’t teaching that merely hearing words with our ears automatically saves us.
Earlier in the chapter, Paul asks:
“And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard?” — Romans 10:14 KJV
Before someone can believe the gospel, they must first hear the gospel.
That’s why preaching and teaching God’s Word matter.
BUT HEARING IS ONLY THE BEGINNING
Someone can hear God’s Word every Sunday and still refuse to obey it.
Jesus said:
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.” — John 14:15 KJV
James gives an equally serious warning:
“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” — James 1:22 KJV
So biblical faith doesn’t stop at hearing.
We hear the Word.
We believe the Word.
We trust Christ.
We obey the gospel.
And we continue faithfully walking with Him.
Romans 10:17 destroys the idea that we should build our relationship with God around whatever feels right.
Feelings change.
Culture changes.
People change.
God’s Word does not.
When you’re confused—go back to the Word.
When your faith becomes weak—go back to the Word.
When the world tells you something completely different from what God says—go back to the Word.
Because you cannot build strong faith while starving yourself of the very thing God says produces it.
Faith comes by hearing.
And hearing comes by the Word of God.
Open your Bible.
Read it.
Study it.
Live it.
You cannot follow a God you refuse to listen to.
