Q: What does John 1:1 mean when it says, “In the beginning was the Word”?
A: John begins before Bethlehem, before creation, before time as we know it. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The “Word” is Jesus Christ. John makes this unmistakable in verse 14 when he says “the Word became flesh.”
Jesus did not begin in a manger. He existed before the world existed. He was with God, showing distinction, and He was God, revealing His divine nature. Then John tells us that everything that was created was made through Him.
That changes how you see Jesus.
He wasn’t simply a good teacher, prophet, or remarkable man who appeared 2,000 years ago. The Creator stepped into His own creation. The eternal Word became flesh, walked among us, suffered among us, and ultimately died for us.
Before there was a world beneath your feet, Jesus was.
And the One who created you is still calling you to Him.
