Q: Does the Bible really say our life is like a vapor?
Yes. James gives us one of the most sobering descriptions of human life in Scripture:
“Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” — James 4:14 KJV
Think about that. God compares your entire earthly life to a vapor—something that appears for a moment and disappears. We make plans for next year, worry about next week, chase money, hold grudges, fight over pride, and sometimes live as though we have unlimited time. But God says you don’t even know what tomorrow will bring. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t make plans. It means we should never make plans as though God and eternity don’t matter.
Q: Why does God remind us that life is so short?
Because remembering death can teach us how to live. Psalm 90:12 says, “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” When you understand that your days are numbered, priorities begin to change. Petty arguments don’t seem as important. Pride starts looking foolish. Time with your family becomes more valuable. Serving God becomes urgent. You begin to understand that possessions, popularity, titles and money eventually stay behind. What matters is whether you lived faithfully before the God who gave you life.
Q: Should Christians be afraid that life can end suddenly?
Christians should respect the seriousness of death, but we don’t have to live terrified of it. Hebrews 9:27 says, “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” Death isn’t the end of the story. That’s why our relationship with God matters now. We aren’t promised enough time to get serious with Him someday. We aren’t promised another year, another month, or even tomorrow. The time to repent, obey God, forgive, love, serve and live faithfully is while we still have breath.
Q: So how should knowing that life is a vapor change the way I live?
Stop wasting your short life on things that have no eternal value. Love your family. Help people. Forgive. Stop allowing other people’s opinions to control you. Do what is right even when nobody applauds you. Most importantly, put God first and remain faithful to Him. Ecclesiastes 12:13 says, “Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.”
You entered this world with nothing, and you will leave it the same way.
The clock is already moving.
Life is a vapor. Eternity isn’t.
Live accordingly.
