Q: What did Jesus mean when He said the road to destruction is wide, but the way to life is narrow?
Jesus said:
“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:”
“Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” — Matthew 7:13–14 KJV
Those are uncomfortable words.
Jesus described two ways.
One is broad.
One is narrow.
One has many.
One has few.
And only one leads to life.
Q: Why is the broad road so crowded?
Because the broad road is easy.
It tells you:
Do whatever feels good.
Believe whatever you want.
Follow the culture.
Follow your desires.
Don’t worry about repentance.
Don’t worry about obedience.
Don’t let anyone tell you you’re wrong.
Just follow the crowd.
The broad road doesn’t require much resistance because you’re moving in the same direction as everyone around you.
But Jesus warned us:
A crowded road can still be going the wrong direction.
Q: Why is God’s way narrow?
Not because God wants people to fail.
Scripture says God is “not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” — 2 Peter 3:9 KJV
The way is narrow because truth has boundaries.
Jesus didn’t say every road eventually reaches God.
He said:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” — John 14:6 KJV
That’s narrow.
There aren’t a thousand truths.
There aren’t a thousand Saviors.
There is Christ.
Q: Does walking the narrow road mean Christians are perfect?
Absolutely not.
The narrow road isn’t filled with perfect people.
It’s filled with repentant people.
People who stumble and get back up.
People who sin and turn back toward God.
People who fight temptation.
People who sometimes feel alone because they refuse to follow everyone else.
Walking with Christ doesn’t mean you’ll never fall.
It means when you fall, you know which direction to get back up and walk.
Q: Why did Jesus say only a few find it?
Because following Christ costs something.
Jesus said:
“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” — Matthew 16:24 KJV
The world says:
Follow yourself.
Jesus says:
Deny yourself.
The world says:
Do whatever makes you happy.
Jesus says:
Follow Me.
The world says:
Fit in.
Jesus says:
Be faithful.
That’s why the narrow road isn’t always comfortable.
Sometimes following God means walking away from something everybody else accepts.
Q: Should I be worried if my beliefs aren’t popular?
Popularity has never determined truth.
Noah didn’t have the majority.
The prophets often didn’t have the majority.
Jesus Himself was rejected.
The apostles were persecuted.
So never look around at the size of the crowd and assume:
They must be right because there are more of them.
Jesus already warned us that the broad road would have plenty of people on it.
Q: How do I know which road I’m walking?
Don’t ask only:
“Do I believe in God?”
Ask:
Does my life belong to Him?
Am I obeying His Word?
Am I willing to repent when I’m wrong?
Am I following Christ when following Him costs me something?
Am I allowing Scripture to change me—or am I changing Scripture to fit me?
Because the narrow road isn’t something you accidentally wander onto.
Jesus said:
“Enter ye in…”
That’s a decision.
At some point every person reaches the same spiritual intersection.
One road will be wide.
Comfortable.
Popular.
Crowded.
The other may be narrow.
Difficult.
And sometimes lonely.
Don’t choose your direction by counting how many people are walking beside you.
Look at where the road ends.
Jesus already told us.
One leads to destruction.
The other leads to life.
So when the crowd moves one direction and Christ calls you another…
choose Christ.
Even if you’re standing alone.
Even if people don’t understand.
Even if it costs you something.
Because at the end of your life, the question won’t be:
How many people walked beside you?
The question will be:
Where did the road you chose lead you?
“Narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life…” — Matthew 7:14 KJV
