“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5 KJV
A: Proverbs 3:5 is easy to quote when life is going well. It becomes much harder to live when everything stops making sense. God is telling us not to build our faith around what we can see, understand, predict, or control. Our understanding is limited. We see today—God sees the end from the beginning.
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart” means there can be no hidden corner of your life where you tell God, I trust You with everything except this. Your family, your future, your finances, your pain, your unanswered prayers, your fears and the things keeping you awake at night all have to be placed in His hands.
That does not mean Christians will never feel afraid, confused, hurt or stressed. It means those feelings do not become our god. We don’t allow fear to make our decisions or circumstances to determine our faith.
“Lean not unto thine own understanding” may be the hardest part. Sometimes what God allows will not make sense to you. Sometimes the door closes. Sometimes the prayer isn’t answered the way you wanted. Sometimes the road God allows you to walk is one you never would have chosen.
Trust Him anyway.
Faith is not saying, “God, I’ll trust You once I understand.”
Faith is saying, “God, I don’t understand—but I still trust You.”
You don’t have to know what tomorrow holds when you know who holds tomorrow.
Stop carrying what belongs in God’s hands.
