WHAT DOES PROVERBS SAY ABOUT WISDOM?

Q: What is real wisdom, and where does it come from?

The book of Proverbs gives us the starting point:

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” — Proverbs 1:7 KJV

A: Biblical wisdom doesn’t begin with education, age, money or intelligence.

It begins with fearing God.

That doesn’t mean living terrified of God. It means recognizing who He is, respecting His authority, listening to His Word and understanding that one day we will answer to Him.

You can be highly educated and still make foolish decisions.

You can know how to make money and not know how to keep your family together.

You can know Scripture and still destroy yourself by refusing to obey it.

That’s why Proverbs repeatedly warns about something dangerous:

Thinking you’re wiser than you really are.

“Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.” — Proverbs 3:7 KJV

Pride tells you, I know what I’m doing.

Wisdom asks, What does God say?

Proverbs also tells us:

“For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.” — Proverbs 2:6 KJV

Real wisdom comes from God.

And wisdom isn’t simply knowing the right answer.

Wisdom is having enough understanding to actually live by it.

A wise person listens before speaking. Thinks before acting. Accepts correction. Controls anger. Watches the company they keep. Works diligently. Guards their words. Avoids temptation. And when God says something is wrong, they don’t look for an excuse to make it right.

Proverbs gives one of its strongest warnings:

“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” — Proverbs 14:12 KJV

That’s frightening because foolishness doesn’t always look foolish in the beginning.

Some roads look good.

Some decisions feel right.

Some temptations seem harmless.

Some people will even encourage you to take them.

Wisdom looks farther down the road.

Before you make the decision, ask where it leads.

Before you speak, think about what your words can destroy.

Before you follow the crowd, ask whether the crowd is following God.

And before trusting your own heart completely, open God’s Word.

Because the greatest danger isn’t admitting you don’t know everything.

It’s believing you do.

Proverbs says:

“Whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he.” — Proverbs 16:20 KJV

Seek wisdom.

Accept correction.

Fear God.

Obey His Word.

Because you only get one life—and some foolish decisions leave consequences that wisdom could have prevented.

“Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.” — Proverbs 3:13 KJV
