The Bible’s answer is unmistakable: yes. Witchcraft is never presented as harmless entertainment, a shortcut to spiritual wisdom, or another path to God. From Genesis to Revelation, God repeatedly warns His people not to seek supernatural power, hidden knowledge, or guidance through mediums, sorcery, fortune-telling, spells, or communication with spirits. God calls His people to seek Him—not spiritual power apart from Him.
Many people today dismiss witchcraft as harmless fun or a modern spiritual practice. It appears in movies, television, video games, tarot cards, crystals, astrology, psychic readings, séances, spell books, and social media. Because it has become so common, many assume there is no danger. But Satan has never needed evil to look ugly. Throughout history, deception has often appeared attractive, mysterious, empowering, and even beautiful. The greatest lies are rarely obvious. They are wrapped in curiosity.
God spoke plainly through Moses:
“There shall not be found among you anyone who practices divination, or tells fortunes, or interprets omens, or a sorcerer… For whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord.” (Deuteronomy 18:10–12)
Those are strong words because the danger is real. Every occult practice encourages people to seek answers, protection, wisdom, or power from somewhere other than God. The issue is not whether someone believes they are “just having fun.” The issue is where they are placing their trust.
The New Testament never softens that warning. In Acts 19, many who became followers of Christ gathered their books of magic and burned them publicly. They understood that following Jesus meant leaving those practices behind completely. In Galatians 5:19–21, sorcery is listed among the works of the flesh that separate people from God’s kingdom. Scripture consistently points believers away from the occult and toward Christ.
This does not mean Christians should live in fear of darkness. We do not fear evil because Christ has overcome it. But we are never commanded to flirt with it, experiment with it, or invite it into our lives. A person who knows a bridge is collapsing doesn’t test how far they can walk onto it. They stay away from it entirely.
The apostle Paul reminds believers:
“Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.” (Ephesians 5:11)
Our fascination should never be with darkness. It should always be with the Light.
The world will tell you that witchcraft is empowering. The Bible says true power belongs to God. The world says to trust the stars. God says trust the One who created the stars. The world says seek hidden knowledge. God says His Word is enough to equip you for every good work.
If you belong to Christ, you don’t need tarot cards to reveal your future. You don’t need a psychic to guide your path. You don’t need crystals for protection. You don’t need spells for power. You don’t need to communicate with spirits when you can pray directly to the Creator of heaven and earth. Everything you truly need is found in Jesus Christ.
The battle between light and darkness is real. Scripture calls believers not to explore the darkness, but to walk confidently in the light. Every step toward Christ leads to life. Every step toward forbidden spiritual practices leads away from the One who alone is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
