Proverbs 3:5
Q: What does Proverbs 3:5 mean when it tells us not to lean on our own understanding?
A: It means there will be moments in your life when God’s way won’t make sense to you—and you must decide whether you trust what you see or trust the God who sees everything.
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5 KJV
Those words sound simple when life is going well.
They’re much harder when you’re standing in the middle of something you don’t understand.
When the prayer hasn’t been answered.
When the door closes.
When somebody you love leaves.
When you’ve done the right thing and everything still seems to go wrong.
That’s when trust becomes real.
GOD NEVER ASKED YOU TO UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING
We want explanations.
Why did this happen?
Why didn’t God stop it?
Why hasn’t He answered me?
Why am I going through this?
But Proverbs doesn’t say, Understand the Lord with all your heart.
It says:
TRUST HIM.
Your understanding is limited to what you can see today. God sees the beginning, the middle and the end.
That’s why the next verse matters:
“In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” — Proverbs 3:6 KJV
Notice it doesn’t say you’ll always know where the road leads.
It says He will direct it.
TRUST IS MORE THAN SAYING “I BELIEVE IN GOD”
Trust means allowing God’s Word to overrule your feelings.
When your heart says quit—but God says remain faithful.
When the world says compromise—but Scripture says stand firm.
When fear says there is no way forward—but God tells you to keep walking.
You trust Him enough to obey Him even when you don’t understand Him.
That’s faith.
Not believing God only when life makes sense.
Believing God when nothing makes sense.
STOP TRYING TO CONTROL EVERY CHAPTER
Some of the greatest stress in life comes from trying to control things that were never ours to control.
You’ve replayed it.
Analyzed it.
Worried about it.
Lost sleep over it.
And after all of that…
you still don’t know what tomorrow holds.
But God does.
So maybe tonight you don’t need another answer.
Maybe you simply need to say:
“God, I don’t understand this. But I trust You.”
You don’t have to see the entire road.
You only need enough faith to take the next step.
Trust God when you understand.
Trust God when you don’t.
And never let what you cannot see make you forget Who is leading you.
