We’ve all heard it.
“It’s just a little white lie.”
“I lied so I wouldn’t hurt their feelings.”
“Everyone lies.”
The world often treats lying as something small.
The Bible does not.
From the beginning of Scripture, truth is connected with God’s character, while lies are connected with Satan’s work.
Jesus said of the devil:
“He was a murderer from the beginning… for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
— John 8:44
Think about that.
Jesus didn’t simply say Satan tells lies.
He called him the father of lies.
Every lie, whether large or small, stands in opposition to the God of truth.
God Loves Truth
God’s nature is perfectly truthful.
The Bible says:
“It is impossible for God to lie.”
— Hebrews 6:18
God never deceives.
He never exaggerates.
He never manipulates.
Everything He says is true.
As His followers, we are called to reflect that same character.
Why Is Lying So Serious?
A lie may seem harmless in the moment.
But every lie damages something.
It damages trust.
It damages relationships.
It damages character.
One lie often requires another to cover the first.
Before long, a person becomes trapped by the very deception they created.
The Bible warns:
“Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who deal truthfully are His delight.”
— Proverbs 12:22
That is strong language.
God delights in truth.
He hates deception.
What About “Little” Lies?
Many people divide lies into categories.
Little lies.
Big lies.
Half-truths.
The Bible doesn’t make those distinctions.
Every lie is still a departure from the truth.
That doesn’t mean every lie carries the same earthly consequences, but it does mean God calls His people to be people of integrity.
The apostle Paul wrote:
“Therefore, putting away lying, let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor…”
— Ephesians 4:25
Truthfulness should become part of who we are.
Is There Forgiveness?
Yes.
Like every sin, lying can be forgiven.
When we confess our sin, repent, and turn back to God, His grace is greater than our failures.
God does not ask us to become perfect overnight.
He calls us to become faithful.
Faithful people tell the truth—even when it costs them.
Application
Ask yourself:
- Am I completely honest?
- Do my words match my actions?
- Would people describe me as trustworthy?
- Is there someone I need to tell the truth to today?
Truth may cost you something in the moment.
A lie will almost always cost you more.
Build your reputation on honesty.
Speak with integrity.
Keep your word.
Because once trust is broken…
It can take years to rebuild.
God is the God of truth.
If we want to follow Him…
We must become people who tell the truth.
Even when it’s difficult.
Even when it’s uncomfortable.
Even when it costs us.
The truth may be painful for a moment.
A lie can leave a lifetime of damage.
