WHAT IS GODLY WISDOM, AND HOW DO WE OBTAIN IT?

Question: What is godly wisdom, and why is it more valuable than human intelligence?

Answer:

There are people walking this earth with brilliant minds, impressive degrees, and more knowledge than they know what to do with, yet they lack the wisdom to live a righteous life. They can explain the mysteries of science, build extraordinary things, and debate the greatest minds, but cannot recognize the foolishness of their own pride. Intelligence is the ability to acquire knowledge. Godly wisdom is knowing how to apply truth according to the will of God. One can make you successful in the eyes of the world. The other can lead you toward eternal life.

Proverbs 9:10 tells us, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” True wisdom begins with reverence for God, humility before His authority, and obedience to His Word. It is not measured by your education, wealth, age, or accomplishments. A person can possess very little worldly knowledge and still have greater spiritual wisdom than someone considered a genius.

James 3:17 describes wisdom from above as pure, peaceable, gentle, willing to yield to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial, and sincere. Godly wisdom does not produce arrogance, hatred, jealousy, or selfish ambition. It produces humility, righteousness, self-control, and love. If your intelligence makes you look down on others, your pride may be greater than your wisdom.

James 1:5 reminds us that if we lack wisdom, we should ask God, who gives generously. But asking is only the beginning. We must study His Word, accept correction, turn away from sin, and put His teachings into practice. James 1:22 commands us to be doers of the Word, not hearers only. Wisdom is not simply knowing what God says. It is having the faith and courage to obey Him.

Proverbs 3:7 warns, “Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.” One of the most dangerous people is someone so convinced of their own intelligence that they refuse correction. A wise person understands that no matter how much they learn, they will always need God’s guidance.

The Final Truth: You can spend your entire life filling your mind with knowledge and still leave this world spiritually bankrupt. You can impress people with your intelligence, accumulate wealth, and receive the applause of the world, but none of it can replace a faithful relationship with God.

Never confuse a brilliant mind with a wise soul. Intelligence may teach you how to conquer the world, but godly wisdom teaches you how not to lose your soul in the process.

“For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.” — 1 Corinthians 3:19 (KJV)
