If you’ve lived long enough, you’ve probably asked this question.

You watch an honest person struggle to pay the bills while someone who lies, cheats, and takes advantage of others seems to become richer every year.

You see corruption rewarded.

Pride applauded.

Integrity ignored.

People who do wrong appear to prosper while those trying to live faithfully often carry heavy burdens.

And somewhere deep inside, you wonder…

“God, how can this be?”

If you’ve ever wrestled with that question, you’re not alone.

In fact, some of God’s most faithful servants asked the very same thing.

One of them was Asaph, the writer of Psalm 73.

Asaph confessed that he nearly lost his faith because he looked around and saw wicked people prospering. They appeared healthy, wealthy, and carefree while he struggled to remain faithful.

He wrote:

“For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.”
— Psalm 73:3

Asaph wasn’t pretending.

He was being honest with God.

He looked at the world and couldn’t understand why those who ignored God often seemed to have easier lives than those who tried to obey Him.

Then something changed.

He wrote:

“Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end.”
— Psalm 73:17

The problem wasn’t that Asaph misunderstood the present.

The problem was that he had forgotten eternity.

God helped him see what he could not see on his own.

Temporary success is not the same as eternal victory.

King David gave similar encouragement in Psalm 37:

“Do not fret because of evildoers… for they will soon fade like the grass.”
— Psalm 37:1–2

David wasn’t saying evil people never succeed for a season.

He was reminding us that earthly success is temporary.

Money fades.

Power fades.

Popularity fades.

Even life itself is temporary.

But our relationship with God has eternal consequences.

Jesus asked one of the most important questions ever recorded:

“For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?”
— Mark 8:36

A person may gain wealth, influence, fame, or power.

But if those things come at the cost of rejecting God, they have not truly won.

They have lost what matters most.

That doesn’t mean life is always easy for those who follow Christ.

Jesus never promised that.

In fact, He warned His followers that they would face trials, persecution, and hardship.

Yet He also promised something the world cannot offer:

His presence.

His peace.

His forgiveness.

And the hope of eternal life.

The world often measures success by bank accounts, titles, possessions, and popularity.

God measures success differently.

He looks at the heart.

He values faithfulness over fame.

Integrity over influence.

Obedience over applause.

That perspective changes everything.

Application

If you find yourself discouraged because it seems that dishonest people are getting ahead, remember this:

You are only seeing one chapter of their story.

God sees the entire book.

Do not compare your temporary struggles with someone else’s temporary success.

Stay faithful.

Keep your integrity.

Treat people with kindness.

Honor God in the way you live.

Trust Him even when life doesn’t seem fair.

Because one day every person will stand before God.

On that day, wealth will not matter.

Popularity will not matter.

Power will not matter.

Only one question will matter:

Were you faithful to the One who gave you life?

The wicked may appear to win for a season.

But seasons end.

God’s justice does not.

And those who remain faithful to Him have a hope that no amount of earthly success can ever replace.
