A promise shouldn’t be something you say because it sounds good in the moment. Your word carries your character with it. Every time you tell someone “I promise,” you’re asking them to trust you—to believe that when the moment comes, your actions will match your words.
Don’t promise forever when you’re already looking for the exit. Don’t promise you’ll be there when you know you won’t. Don’t tell someone “You can count on me” if you’re going to disappear the moment keeping your word becomes inconvenient. Broken promises don’t just break words. They break trust. And once trust is shattered, an apology doesn’t always put every piece back where it belonged.
Sometimes circumstances change and a promise genuinely becomes impossible to keep. But there’s a difference between being unable to keep your word and never truly intending to keep it.
So speak carefully. Promise less. Deliver more.
Because eventually people stop listening to what you say and start watching what you do.
Your word should mean something when your name is attached to it.
