There comes a moment in every battle when something has to change. Not because the pain suddenly disappears. Not because life suddenly becomes easier. But because somewhere deep inside, a quiet voice begins to whisper, “I don’t want to live like this anymore.” That moment is often invisible to everyone else, yet it can become the turning point that changes an entire life. Healing rarely begins with perfect circumstances. It begins with a decision.
Darkness has a way of convincing us that it is permanent. It tells us that this is simply who we are now. It whispers that the depression will never lift, the addiction will never break, the guilt will never leave, the anxiety will never quiet down, and the broken pieces of our lives will never fit together again. The longer we listen to those lies, the more they begin to sound like truth. But they are still lies. Darkness survives by convincing you there is no way out.
If you truly want to leave the darkness, there is something you must first tell yourself—and then keep telling yourself until you believe it.
I can heal.
I can change.
I want to live.
Those are not empty motivational phrases. They are declarations of hope. They are the first blows against the prison walls that have held you captive. You may not believe those words completely on the first day, and that is okay. Say them anyway. Sometimes faith begins by speaking truth before your feelings have caught up.
The next step is choosing to stop feeding the darkness. Every day we feed something inside of us. We feed fear or we feed faith. We feed bitterness or we feed forgiveness. We feed despair or we feed hope. We feed lies or we feed truth. Whatever we nourish will grow stronger. If you continually surround yourself with negativity, isolation, toxic influences, and destructive habits, the darkness will gladly make itself at home. But if you begin filling your mind with God’s Word, surrounding yourself with people who genuinely care, praying even when you feel like heaven is silent, and taking one faithful step at a time, you begin starving the darkness while strengthening the light.
The Bible reminds us in Isaiah 41:10, *”Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold
…you with My righteous right hand.”*
Notice that God does not promise we will never walk through darkness. He promises that we will not walk through it alone. There is a tremendous difference. His presence does not always remove the storm immediately, but it gives us the strength to keep moving through it one step at a time.
Leaving the darkness also requires action. We cannot remain in the same places, continue the same habits, surround ourselves with the same influences, and expect a different outcome. Sometimes healing begins with a difficult conversation. Sometimes it begins by asking for help. Sometimes it begins by turning off what feeds your mind, forgiving someone who has held your heart captive for years, opening your Bible after it has gathered dust, or falling to your knees in prayer for the first time in a long time. Small steps may seem insignificant, but they are often the beginning of great victories.
The enemy wants you to believe that because you have fallen before, you will always fall again. God says something entirely different. Proverbs 24:16 tells us, “Though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again.” The mark of a faithful person is not that they never fall. It is that they refuse to stay there. Every time you choose to stand back up, you declare that your past will not determine your future.
There may be days when progress feels painfully slow. There may be mornings when getting out of bed feels like climbing a mountain. There may be nights when the darkness whispers louder than hope. On those days, remember that healing is rarely one giant leap. More often, it is a thousand small decisions made over and over again. One prayer. One honest conversation. One page of Scripture. One act of courage. One more step toward the light.
Jesus made an incredible promise in John 8:12:
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Notice He did not say to admire the light.
He said to follow it.
Following Christ is not a single moment; it is a daily decision. Every day you choose truth over lies, hope over despair, forgiveness over bitterness, and faith over fear, you are taking another step out of the darkness and into the life God desires for you.
If you are waiting until you feel strong enough to begin, you may wait forever. Strength often comes after you decide to move, not before. God has always specialized in giving courage to those who take the first step in faith. The Red Sea did not part until Moses obeyed. The walls of Jericho did not fall until Joshua marched. Peter did not walk on water until he stepped out of the boat.
Today could become that first step for you.
Tell yourself the truth.
I don’t want to stay here anymore.
I want to heal.
I want to live.
With God’s help, I will not let the darkness write the final chapter of my story.
Your scars do not define you.
Your failures do not own you.
Your past does not imprison you.
And your pain does not have the final word.
The God who spoke light into the darkness at the beginning of creation is still speaking light into broken lives today.
So lift your head.
Take one more step.
Reach for His hand.
Because no matter how long the night has been, dawn has never once failed to come.
And with God, neither will your hope.
